2009 NFL Trade Deadline (Updated Rumors)

I was quite behind today in getting to work on the blog. I had work in the morning, then a doctor appointment, then needed to get some rest from this awesome flu I’ve got. Anyways, I’ve spend some time catching up on all of the days rumors, so let me get them for you.

RAIDERS – (CB)NNAMDI ASOMUGHA
I want to start with Raiders (CB)Nnamdi Asomugha because there have been conflicting reports on his availability before the deadline approaches tomorrow @ 4:00EST. I personally don’t think the Raiders move him, but the 2 teams that keep coming up in trade talks for the star defensive back are the Lions, and Ravens. Makes sense because both are struggling to the point of embarrassment. I don’t see the Lions making a move for him as they are still in re-building mode and draft picks are quite precious to them. The Ravens, now they could swing something together for Asomugha. I still can’t believe that with a secondary that includes (CB)Domonique Foxworth, (CB)Fabian Washington, (CB)Chris Carr, (CB)Frank Walker, and possible rookie gem (CB)Lardarius Webb, that you are in desperate need of a corner back. These players all have so much talent, but are just not using it. What a shame too…what someone needs to do is gets under their asses, and light a fire under there, and keep it held there until they play to their full potential.

CHIEFS – (WR)DWAYNE BOWE
Bowe’s performance yesterday (109yds / 6rec) was supposedly based on the verbal shellacking Chiefs Head Coach Todd Haley gave Bowe during a weak first quarter performance. Haley reportedly told Bowe that if he didn’t produce, then he would be traded. I’m sure Bowe wanted to produce anyways, so it looks good to potential teams that may want to acquire him. Reportedly, as I mentioned on a previous post, the Ravens are interested in the services of Dwayne Bowe. Another team that has reportedly inquired about his availability is the Miami Dolphins.

RAVENS – (LB)ANTWAN BARNES
Supposedly the Ravens have had Barnes on the “trading block” since training camp. I’ve read that the Eagles may be interested in his services, especially with the injury to (LB)Omar Gaither.

CHIEFS – (DT)GLENN DORSEY
The new Chiefs regime apparently hasn’t been “sold” on Glenn Dorsey, and haven’t been since their new regime was in place. With the Chiefs supposedly in “Fire-Sale” mode, Glenn Dorsey would be a guy a lot of teams would be interested in. As of right now, I’m hearing the Lions are very interested in Dorsey and it wouldn’t be surprising if Lions pulled it off before the deadline.

PATRIOTS – (WR)JOEY GALLOWAY
Joey Galloway has been a healthy inactive for 2 straight weeks and the Patriots seem to be looking to trade him. Reportedly the Ravens have inquired about Joey Galloway, because they are actively looking for a wide receiver. But Galloway might be a last option if they fail to get a deal done for Bowe, and another receiver who’s nickname rhymes with Bowe………

BILLS – (WR)TERRELL OWENS
The Ravens made a call to the Bills to see if they could work something out for T.O. Reportedly Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome has dialog with a number of teams concerning a number of different players. No other teams have been reported to have contacted the Bills about Owens.

CHARGERS – (LB)SHAWNE MERRIMAN
I know a lot of teams would be interested in Merriman. I’ve heard the Patriots are really interested in Merriman, and they definitely have a plethora of future picks, so I’m sure parting with one or two of them wouldn’t hurt, especially when you are acquiring Shawne Merriman.

BROWNS – (WR/KR)JOSHUA CRIBBS
The Browns organization, as well as head coach Eric Mangini have stated that they will not be trading Joshua Cribbs. Six teams supposedly made a call to see about his availability including the Colts, Dolphins, Jaguars, 49ers, Chiefs, and Raiders. I guess it will depend on if one of the these teams makes Cleveland an offer they cannot refuse.

HERE ARE A FEW NOTES ON SOME RUMORS PERTAINING TO THE TRADE DEADLINE :

– The Eagles are reportedly still dangling (WR)Kevin Curtis as trade bait.
– The Colts supposedly inquired about the availability of Buccaneers (LB)Barrett Ruud, and Bills (WR)Roscoe Parrish
– The Lions may be interested in Chiefs (LB)Derrick Johnson, and reportedly he could be had for a mid-round pick.
– The Browns could be looking to shop (LB)Kamerion Wimbley, (DL)Corey Williams, and possibly (DT)Shaun Rogers.
– The Jaguars reportedly are looking to shop (DE)Quentin Groves at a low price.
– The Rams may be looking to trade (TE)Randy McMichael, due to the emergence of (TE)Daniel Fells
– The Chargers may be willing to trade (WR)Chris Chambers, but shouldn’t expect to get back much for him.
– Either the Browns don’t want to trade (QB)Brady Quinn or they can’t find any takers.
– Packers (LB)Desmond Bishop, who’s buried on the depth chart, said he would be open to the team trading him before the deadline.

2009 NFL Trade Deadline (Rumors)

Reportedly, the Raiders say they are willing to trade anyone on their roster, excluding (CB)Nnamdi Asomugha. Well, their division rivals, Kansas City Chiefs are also in “fire-sale” mode. It’s being reported that they are willing to trade anyone on their roster excluding (QB)Matt Cassel. So it looks like we may see some deals coming from these 2 teams in the coming days. One specific player the Chiefs are trying to trade is (S)DaJuan Morgan. He was almost traded to the Detroit Lions earlier this season. I’ve heard that the Rams have no interest in trading (RB)Steven Jackson. I’ve also read that there have been no takers for Browns (QB)Brady Quinn so far. I will go in depth with a huge report on all the rumors tomorrow. Got the flu, and need some rest, because I know tomorrow will be a crazy day in NFL news. There was so many key injuries today, which is going to make this deadline even more hectic than it was previously.

2009 NFL Trade Deadline (Rumored Players Available)

After searching through various websites, and reading a lot of reports, I have compiled a list of players who may be available via trade. I’m guessing that if any trades go down at all, they will take place on Monday or Tuesday, next week. Last year, between the months of September and October, 5 trades took place. This year between the months of September and October, 11 trades have taken place so far. So trend has more than doubled. Lets take a look at who could possibly be on the “trading block” before the deadline passes on October 20th.

2009 NFL Trade Deadline (Terrell Owens to the Bears?)

Tuesday, October 20th is the date in which teams can no longer trade during the NFL season. So now, is the time for the teams with a chance at playoff contention to go shopping for that one or two players that they think can help them battle through the playoffs, straight to the Super Bowl. As of right now there are 4 teams (Buccaneers, Titans, Rams, Chiefs) that have yet to produce a single win this season. All of them stand at a record of 0 wins and 5 losses. There are 5 teams (Raiders, Browns, Lions, Bills, Panthers) that have only produced 1 win this season. All in all, there are 9 teams that have to be already thinking about next season. I’m not saying that is the way to go about it, but if you can produce a 1st or 2nd Round Draft Pick for a guy that is not in your future plans, or who’s contract expires at the end of the season anyway, why not make a deal. Even if you are getting a package of picks and/or a player you think could be a part of your future, now is the time to do it. Teams that are in the hunt to take control of their division, should be looking at their current weaknesses, and looking for players that could give them that boost to help them get there. For example, the Bears at 3-1 will need to stay in pace with the Vikings who are at 5-0. The big internet rumor going around at the moment is Buffalo Bills (WR)Terrell Owens could possibly be traded, and the team that has come up in most of these rumors is the Chicago Bears. You could argue that the Bears are good right where they are at with their wide receiving core. Devin Hester, Earl Bennett, and the surprise emergence of rookie Johnny Knox are getting the job done without a doubt…but you have to wonder how much of that is due to the sure-fire accuracy of Jay Cutler.

Now you have to wonder, what kind of damage do you think could be done to opposing defenses, if the Bears aquired (WR)Terrell Owens from the Buffalo Bills for lets say a future 2nd or 3rd Round Draft Pick. I know they have already traded away a plethora of picks to get Jay Cutler, but it’s looking so far to be well worth it. The Bills have Lee Evans (who the Dolphins are reportedly interested in trading for, but won’t happen), Josh Reed, Roscoe Parrish (who is another Bills wide receiver with a great chance of getting traded before the deadline), James Hardy (who will be coming off the PUP list soon), and Steve Johnson (who has already shown great promise).

It all makes perfect sense, because the Bills have a dismal 1-4 record, only have Owens under contract for one year, could potentially receive a great 2010 draft pick for him in exchange, and still have good enough receivers to hold up the rest of this year. The Bears would be taking a risk in aquiring Owens, but it’s undeniable that the connection of Cutler to T.O would wreck havoc among opposing defenses. He would bring a lot of veteran knowledge and leadership to a young receiving core, which would surely benefit the talented group of young receivers the Bears have already. I think Terrell Owens is slowly maturing and has proven it by his behavior so far with the Bills. This is his worst season so far to date, and he has kept his cool, and has said all of the right things to a media that provokes him disrespectfully, after a bad game. The Bills have had 4 of them already this season.

The reality of Terrell Owens being traded at all is slim to none though. Especially with the Bills deciding to ditch their no-huddle offense. It could happen though, and trades such as this I find very intriguing. Trades within the NFL were a rare commodity at one point, but it seems that in the past few years, we’ve seen an increase in movement. Over the next few days I will keep you up-to-date on all of the NFL trade rumors, and examine what players could be “on the market” over the next week.

On a personal note, what I think the Bears should do, is sign free agent (WR)Matt Jones, formally of the Jaguars. He showed plenty of #1 receiving potential, and has all the skills necessary to be one in this game for a long time. He is still young, and has height, which will blend together well with have (TE)Greg Olsen on the field at the same time. With Matt Jones and Devin Hester on the ends, Johnny Knox in the slot, and Greg Olsen, it would bring together a group that we would be able to rely on for a long time to come. We would lose nothing by signing him, because I’m quite sure he would only get signed to the veteran minimum. Let him come in and earn a contract extension next year. He would succeed too. because if you think about it, most of his time he had David Garrard throwing him passes. Decent QB, but no Jay Cutler.

If we signed Matt Jones, then we wouldn’t have to bring in a guy like Terrell Owens. We would also save a ton of money by doing it this way, and wouldn’t have to trade a draft pick. Maybe save that pick to trade for a guy like Shawne Merriman/Chargers, Aaron Kampman/Packers, Derrick Johnson/Chiefs, or Nnamdi Asomugha/Raiders, who are all rumored to be available for the right price, but I’ll save all of that for the days to come. So many possibilities!
